BANGALORE: This year, for the first time in Karnataka's history, Rajyothsava awards will not be given on Nov. 1. Reason: No time! The entire day on Nov. 1 is packed with the Suvarna Karnataka state Golden Jubilee celebrations. With CM H D Kumaraswamy and the state administration tied up at the KSCA for the launch event, the annual event at Ravindra Kalakshetra where the CM gives out the Rajyothsava awards stands postponed.
Kannada and culture secretary I M Vittal Murthy said: "We will give the awards on a different day. The fresh date is to be finalised."
It could be a long wait for the aspirants, for even the announcement of the names could be delayed. As for the awards date, it could be pushed up to the World Kannada Conference at Belgaum in January. The department has put together a list of applicants and those who have recommended them. But there is severe pressure on the CM and home minister M P Prakash to increase the number of awardees from 50 to match last year's record 175."JD(S) and BJP MLAs contend that former CM N Dharam Singh earned goodwill by giving 175 awards. There is a GO limiting the awards to 50 this year, but this may change," sources said. No preparations have been made for the Rajyothsava awards. Annually, by mid-October, the awards committee would have met at least once to draw up awardees' list. But this year, though the committee has been constituted, no meeting has taken place.Officials said they have had no time for Rajyothsava, with resources stretched very thin. The same staff has had to deal with the Dasara, the samskrithi dibbana (culture procession), the Janapada Jathre, the Suvarna Karnataka launch event, the Hampi festival and preparations for the World Kannada Conference, all in two months! In this background, the culture circles feel that the dignity of the Rajyothsava is more important than keeping the date. "The award should not be given in a hurry. A change of date is the better option," senior litterateur Ham Pa Nagarajaiah said.
